North Dakota to parents Fay and Dorothy (Holt) Freeman. The family lived in
Williston where Fay started schools. Later they moved to Conrad, MT before
returning to the family homestead near Richey, MT. Fay graduated from Richey
High School with the Class of 1937. Following graduation she worked for the
County Superintendent in Sidney. On December 17, 1938 she was united in marriage
to Alfred Candee. They made their home on the Candee homestead near Richey. She
loved farm and ranch life, where she worked beside her husband. They were one of
the first ranchers in the area to raise Angus Cattle. She also enjoyed Alfred’s
Arabian horses. Fay and Alfred operated HiLine Equipment where Fay sold many
Versatile parts. She was an excellent bookkeeper and kept the books for all
their businesses. Fay spent many hours working in her yard. She was so proud of
the big pine trees she started as seedlings and fed and protected the deer,
pheasants and wild turkeys in her yard. Each year she would push the lava rock,
which defined the yard, out a bit further. It was a happy day in 1952 when
electricity finally arrived on the homestead. Fay enjoyed the spring time and
all the new calves. She especially enjoyed cooking for the hired hands Alfred
had. Alfred died in 1997 and Fay continued to make her home on the ranch. Fay
loved to read and kept up her daily dairy. Fay appreciated all her many
neighborsespecially Allen and Jeanette Swihart, who checked on her every day and
their daughter Colette. A highlight in Fay’s life was a trip to Great, Falls,
MT. where President Kennedy picked her out of a crowd and shook her hand and
asked her about life in Montana. She enjoyed her many years as election judge at
Grandview Hall. Fay moved to town so her children could come into Sidney for
high school. Fay would comment that the happiest day of her life was when she
married Alfred. She loved her children and grandchildren and put up with the pet
antelope, “Bucky”. Dorothy “Fay” died early Saturday morning, January 29, 2005,
